This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I almost wonder if it's just better to be open about it, especially if you are a Democrat and don't have to worry about the family values voters so much. Just be like, I'm a powerful, wealthy man and I want many mistresses, so there! Hell, you can probably turn it into a Fox reality show, "Who Wants to Sleep with a Senator?" where you can at least pick the hot chicks or the ones who'll let you do the weird stuff.

Adam,...We are evidently one of the few countries where having a mistress is shocking.
Money, power and mistresses are expected in many other countries. If Edwards has a mistress couldn't he have chosen someone more attractive?

Exactly. I'm more disappointed that our politicians have such bad taste in mistresses and less that they have them to begin with. Why are the mistresses almost always barely fives at best? Hell, if this is true, Edwards is many times more attractive than his own mistress. Just on looks alone, Edwards should be getting a 7 rather than a 1.5. Add in the money, and he should be nailing 9s and 10s.

Where are the pictures. They used a split screen to show the two of them. Not very National Enquirer-like. If they had pictures they aren't shy about using them, from my experience.
Are we to believe that these guys followed these people for months, and then forgot to take pictures?

The Sonofamillworker is deader than dead politically. When you've got Sharon Waxman, a respected former NY Times and WaPo reporter picking up on this (he'd denied any involvement with Hunter and the Enquirer nailed him), he's dead meat. No vp choice. Probably no cabinet pick either if Obama wins.

Slate has a good piece on why the news media is practically ignoring these stories.
An excerpt: Although the Craig story and the John Edwards story, currently unfolding thanks to the National Enquirer, aren't directly analogous, they have a bit in common. Edwards, too, may be a sex hypocrite. The tabloid called Edwards a cheater last October and the father of a love child in December, and last night the Enquirer posted a story about Edwards' visit to his alleged mistress and child at the Beverly Hilton on Monday night.

When the original Enquirer story about the affair with Rielle Hunter came out, Edwards categorically denied the relationship, stating: "The story is false. It's completely untrue, ridiculous." As he rejected the Enquirer's charges, Edwards was making his wife and their marriage a central component of his campaign. If Edwards had had no affair, he wasn't a hypocrite, not then and not now.

But if Edwards had an affair and lied about it, shouldn't he suffer scrutiny akin to that of Craig? At least three-dozen daily newspapers in the United States published the Craig news the day after the Roll Call scoop, according to Nexis, but this morning not a single U.S. daily mentioned the Enquirer piece.

I'm sure you're just as attractive and the same weight as you were 20 years ago. However, try being a woman and having three or four kids and see if you can stay petite and attractive. Your comment about Edwards' weight was uncalled for and Right Winged Eagle is an as*hole.

Edwards has always made me sick with his preening. He is so full of himself it makes me want to spit up. Of course he could not have a lover that is more attractive than him. And yes, he does have a feminine demeanor. He is a "pretty boy." Do you remember how he and Obama ganged up on Hillary? He is definately a member of the "all boys club." This also explains why he has a mistress in the first place. He has no respect for women. I was personally aphaulled when I heard that, regardless of the Cancer that is terminal, he was still marching toward the white house. What a bunch of crap. I knew that something was wrong with that couple, now I know what it is. His wife must know that he has a mistress and this was her chance to watch him on the road and at least try to out-do her competition.

The whole thing makes me sick:
    1. Slut woman who will wait forever.
    2. Abused wife who begs at her husband's feet for even the crumbs.
    3. Pretty boy, not a senator any more, acting like he is "all for America" when he clearly is "all for getting praise!"

Compared to what, CBS who aired an edited interview to cover up McCain's ignorance?

It is a sad state of affairs when Comedy Central and the National Enquirer report stories that the mainstream try to bury, but welcome to the most criminal, corporate ruled government in American history and their corporate partners in the mainstream media. The New World Order is Orwellian!

Here's the problem: if he denies the story then his response will become news and it is at THAT point that I expect the news media to jump on this story. This is how Nightline and other programs covered the famous National Enquirer photos that sank Gary Hart - they covered it not as a "we're following up on the Enquirer" story because that could make them look like they're their standards so much as a "lets look at how a candidate is responding to a trashy story"

There was a time when one can just ignore a story from tabloids and it'd go away.

    Those days are gone.

    As this writer asks:

"How long can the papers avoid this story in the age of the Internet, bloggers like me, and guys like Matt Drudge, who've posted the National Enquirer tale?"

Oh yes. We should get all excited and discuss this long into the night.

A story from the National Enquirer.

I see this story nowhere else. No buzz, nothing.

How about waiting for a better source, really. No saying it's not true, I have nno idea. But when it comes to the NE one really needs more than one source.

The National Inquirer is going way to far with these claims. Edwards should just sue them for defamation of character.

I thought exactly the same thing Dolores. At least he doesn't have to hire a lawyer to do it!

I rank it right up there with the alien baby stories in believability.

Truth is a valid defense so he should sue them - unless he did it. If it is true and he sues, his career is over.

People of like party affiliation tend to rally 'round these guys long after they are caught and then say things like 'it doesn't matter if he is unfaithful to his wife with cancer' ...

... if his wife can't trust him, how can we? That goes for members of both parties.

Truth would probably prove him innocent of this accusation.

And it seems equally as likely that party affiliation has some to do with the willingness to believe a charge by a source like the National Enquirer.

As if you ave a @!$%# about the truth. The damage will have already been done even if it's not the truth. The trolls will accomplished their mission. The idiots on the right will quote it here on the vine, ad nauseam , Rush will write a song about it. All for what? Just because you don't like the guy. (for whatever reason).

The thruth doesn't make any difference any more. Just nasty dirty tactics.

I don't know if this is true or not. I'm not sure why we're supposed to care if it is true. Rdwards didn't have a canpaign like Craig did about gays or the Defense of Marriage Act that he was flogging. If it's not true I suppose the aim is to ruin any further political aspirations he might have for an Obama cabinet appointment or VP chance.

    What bull@!$%#, How sad.

It's amazing to me that we get anyone to run for office any more.

Which also brought us such great stories as Elvis is alive with Aliens, Batboy and of course how the world was going to end in 2000

she kinda looked like an alien...I don't think it matters if it is true or not. It is out there so folks are going to believe it. I would have preferred a picture of the two of them together it would have been more believable. I am certainly not a Edwards supporter, but he could have been more discreet. If it is true!!

While the story may or may not be true, I am a little concerned at the ease at which some of the commenters are accepting it, without any proof at all.

Both parties denied the NATIONAL ENQUIRER report and a close friend of Edwards' came forward and said he was the father of Rielle's baby...they revealed that Edwards was engineering a massive cover up of his shocking infidelity.

Riiiight never mind that's all I needed to know it was bs.

They met when she was making video films for his Presidential campaign. He's out on the campaign trail...Elizabeth got exhausted from the traveling and had to go home to rest--she has cancer, and therapy can drain a person. Rielle played around with camera shots, cajoled him, they got comfortable with each other--which is a good thing between a photographer/film maker and subject. Things happen. But it does look bad when his wife is so terribly sick, and he's been playing Mr. Good Guy who'll save the poor...then sets Rielle up in a big, expensive house in an extremely nice town in his state...that takes some serious cash. And look where it got that young NY Governor who was fighting prostitution...by visiting a prostitute. It's all in how you paint yourself....especially when you get cornered.

Look at Al Gore...preaching conservation and "doing without", but being driven to "appearances" in Lincoln Town Cars with AC...and an SUV.

It's really all about how you "paint" yourself....

I think this is just a bunch of high school bathroom gossip. The fact that these two were seen together does not automatically equal an affair or sexual relationship. It is possible for men and women to be close friends and not actually be dating one another.

The only facts in the story is that they were in the hotel with each other and that Edwards left in the middle of the night.

There is no mention of the purpose of the meeting so the reporter is assuming it must be sexually related. The possibility that Hunter could be trying to discuss a current or future business deal with Edwards is never mentioned. Since she worked for Edwards as a video producer in the past would suggest the possibility of a future film project in which Edwards may be involved in, or at the very least, Hunter was attempting to pitch to him.

I don't know why he would run and then hide in a hotel bathroom for 15 minutes if there was nothing strange going on being there. Though I think his campaign staffer taking one for the team by saying it's his illicit love child was nice - probably didn't make that guy's wife all that happy though.

Assuming the story is true -- and we don't know that for sure (yet) -- then one wonders who put their reporters on to the location of the rendezvous???
Or could they be bugging Edwards' phone? For shame -- bugging is illegal in the US of A (sarcasm alert).

Men in Black is a movie. The National Enquirer is not, imo, a reliable source of news. AND, who the hells cares about what politicians do in their private lives, as long as they are doing the job they are hired to do?
